Binding Connectivity in Copular Sentences

چکیده

This paper takes as its point of departure the hypothesis that surface structures directly receive a model theoretic interpretation, without being mapped into (or derived from) a mediating level such as deep structure or LF. In particular, I am concerned with those cases centering around binding which are often thought to necessitate some kind of abstract level. Note that the standard view of binding and binding constraints is that there are two items a binder and a bindee and that these have to be in some particular syntactic relationship in order for binding to take place. It is, however, well known that there are many cases where on the surface the two items are not in fact in the appropriate configurational relationship the usual solution is thus to posit some abstract level at which they are. But an alternative solution is to reject the idea that binding is a relationship between two NPs in a given syntactic configuration, and this is the view which will be taken here. In this paper, I will concentrate on one instance of (apparently) unexpected binding effects found in specificational copular sentences. Copular sentences are particularly illuminating in this regard since they in fact exhibit a variety of connectivity effects; a few of these are sketched in (1).

That is Rosa Identificational Sentences as Intensional Predication

This paper presents an analysis of identificational sentences like That is a woman and That is Rosa as predicational sentences. We argue that the pre-copular demonstrative denotes an individual concept and that the post-copular phrase denotes a sort, in the sense of Gupta (1980): a function from worlds into sets of individual concepts. These sentences provide evidence for a model in which trans...

Specificational Pseudoclefts in English

Specificational pseudoclefts (SPCs) have been a great challenge for a syntactic theory, because, despite the surface division between the preand postcopular elements, the post-copular ‘pivot’ behaves as if it occupied the gap position in the precopular wh-clause. This paper argues that movement-based or deletion-based syntactic approaches and purely semantic approaches have problems in dealing ...

On so - called truncated clefts

As these authors observe, the sentences in (1) and (2) are similar in both form and meaning. The truncated clefts in (1) look like the clefts in (2) minus the cleft clause, and in the right contexts, each of the sentences in (1) can be used with the meaning of the corresponding sentence in (2). Following a question like Who went to Hamburg?, (1b) can be used to convey what (2b) conveys, and fol...

Interpreting ‘Be’

This paper proposes an approach to the interpretation of copular sentences in English that analyses be as a one-place predicate with underspecified semantic content. The interpretation of a copula clause is determined through the interaction of syntactic and pragmatic processes and depends on the properties of expressions collocated with be and general contextual factors, both local and non-loc...

A Survey on Stability Measure of Networks

In this paper we discuss about tenacity and its properties in stability calculation. We indicate relationships between tenacity and connectivity, tenacity and binding number, tenacity and toughness. We also give good lower and upper bounds for tenacity.
